Is Low Grade Infection a Contributing Factor of Disc Degeneration?| Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVD) has a multi factorial origin. Genetic and environmental factors are major determinants. However the pathomechanisms of IVD is inadequately understood. Low grade infection has also been implicated, however, its scientific rigor has been questioned. This article reviews the current literature in this field. Evidence suggests that low grade infection can also be imputed as a potential causative factor of IVD and perhaps serves as a paradigm shift of our current thinking in this entity. Desmoplastic Medulloblastoma with Atypical Presentation in an Adult Patient: A Case Report| Medulloblastomas are usually in desmoplastic type in adults. This type of medulloblastoma is generally a well-circumscribed tumor. In this report we present an adult patient with desmoplastic medulloblastoma with atypical appearance on magnetic resonance imaging mimicking cerebellar infarction, infectious or demyelinating diseases. He was followed for atypical radiological imaging with misdiagnoses of those diseases. However, histological diagnosis was desmoplastic type medulloblastoma. Clinico-radiological Presentations of Maxillofacial Hard Tissue Swellings in a Tertiary Health Facility in West African Suburb | To study the prevalence of jaw swellings among maxillofacial surgery patients, the demographics of the patients with jaw swellings and the radiological characteristics of these jaw swellings seen over a period of fifteen years. Descriptive retrospective-prospective study. (A retrospective review of cases seen in a ten year period between 1996 and 2005 and a prospective study of cases seen in a five year period between 2006 and 2010). Clear Cell Odontogenic Carcinoma-A Review of the Literature | Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma is a rare jaw lesion with predominantly clear cell characteristics. Although touted as a benign lesion in the initial stages, once the aggressive nature of the lesion became evident, it was reclassified as a malignant tumor by the World Health Organization. Etiology of this lesion remains elusive, and association with any precursory lesion is yet to be proved. It may have their origins from odontogenic epithelium, salivary gland pathologies or even as metastasis from distant locations like kidneys. That the ideal treatment plan should be composite resection along with elective neck dissection, followed by reconstruction of the defect. If clinical and radiological examination of the patient reveals, extensive soft tissue invasion, perineural spread, lymph node metastasis with an extra – nodal involvement or in those where tumor-free margins are not possible, then, the use of adjuvant radiation therapy should be considered and employed at the surgeon’s discretion. Even though initial tumor free margins are attained, it is emphasized that the patient should be kept under the long-term follow-up to identify recurrences. Hybrid Variant of Adenomatoid Odentogenic Tumour | Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a rare slow growing tumour, usually associated with an impacted tooth commonly situated in anterior maxillary region. A 14 year old young female complained of swelling on left side of her face which was increasing progressively in size. Aspiration revealed yellow coloured fluid and radiographically a unilocular radiolucent area was seen associated with an impacted canine. The lesion was suspected to be dentigerous cyst. Enucleation was performed and the excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. Microscopic examination revealed AOT showing presence of spindle shaped cells and numerous cystic spaces surrounded by cuboidal or columnar cells. Few epithelial cells formed rosette like structure with eosinophillic coagulum in between.The features of both dentigerous cyst and AOT were overlapping in the lesion. Therefore proper clinical, radiographic and histopathological examination is critical for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for lesions associated with impacted tooth. Comparative Study of Gastro Intestinal Parasites of Greyn Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) in Wild and Captivity | Based on the recent intensify movement to domesticate and farm wild small ruminant animals in this environment, a study was carried out to examine endoparasite present in faecal dropping of grey duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) both in the wild and captivity in Kainji Lake National Park and Federal College of Wildlife Management Mini-Zoo, New Bussa, respectively. The result revealed the type of endoparasites found in the sample, as well as number of eggs and larva. Endoparasites identified include: Threadworm (Stronglyloides papillosus.), Hookworm (Ancylosstoma duodenale), Whipworm (Trichurus globulosa), Blood fluke worm (Schistossoma spindalis) which are found in both animals faecal samples while Large intestinal roundworm (Toxocara vitulorum) was found only in wild grey duiker sample. Threadworm (Stronglyloides spp.) had the highest number of eggs per gram 4, 800 (40.34%) for wild duiker, while 3,300 (41.25%) for captive duiker with 20 and 17 larva for wild duiker and captive duiker respectively. The Hookworm (Ancylosstoma duodenale), have 3,200 (26.89%) eggs per gram for wild duiker and 1,600 (20.0%) for captive duiker while 13 and 12 larva were counted for wild and captive. The Whipworm (Trichuris spp.) had the lowest number of eggs per gram 1,500 (12.60%) for wild duiker while 1,200 (15.0%) for captive duiker and the number of species had the wild duiker and 8 for captive duiker. Schistossoma spp. have the lowest number of eggs per gram 2,300 (19.33%) for the wild duiker, 1,900 (23.75%) for captive duiker with 14 larva for wild duiker and 10 for captive duiker while Large intestine round worm (Toxocara vitulorum) present in wild duiker only with 100eggs (0.84%) and 4 larva. Proper managements should be the priority of all and sundry involved in wild animal domestication for the good health and productive indices of both animals especially as they continue to interact more often with other animals over a large area. A Pilot Study Oriented Towards Patient Outcome | Over 90% of head and neck cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) which are the most common malignancies in the oral cavity. In spite of improved therapeutic procedures, SCCs generally exhibit poor prognosis and in addition, treatment results in significant functional and cosmetic defects. Several factors contribute to a poor prognosis for upper aerodigestive tract SCC patients including the delayed detection of cancerous lesions and the tendency to develop multifocal malignancy and premalignant lesions as a consequence of field cancerization. It has been generally accepted that prompt detection of early oral cancer or epithelial dysplasia is required to improve prognosis.
